Learn the Shape, and You're Already Halfway There

A U-shaped cup and a short handle — once these two shapes are familiar, you'll spot them on any chart.

What Is the Cup and Handle Pattern?

The cup and handle looks exactly like its name — a coffee cup viewed from the side. Price gradually drifts down and back up, forming a U-shaped 'cup,' then dips slightly again in a 'handle' before breaking upward.

It's a classic pattern from decades of stock chart analysis, and it shows up just as often on crypto charts.

Why Is It Considered Bullish?

During the cup, price drops and then slowly recovers as buyers looking for a 'discount' steadily accumulate.

The small dip in the handle is often read as shaking out the last of the weak hands (people eager to sell). When price then breaks upward with volume, the remaining buying pressure tends to push the move further.

How to Spot a Valid Pattern

Not every U-shape counts. Check a few things before trusting it.

Checklist: ① The cup isn't too deep (roughly a third of the prior move is ideal) ② Both sides of the cup are roughly the same height ③ The handle is shorter and shallower than the cup ④ Volume picks up noticeably at the breakout.

Entry Timing and Risk Management

The most common entry is when price breaks above the resistance formed by the top of the handle.

The stop-loss usually sits just below the low of the handle. Here's the key point: 'spotting the pattern' and 'deciding how much to bet' are two entirely different problems — once your entry and stop-loss are set, the rest is just math.

Watch Out for False Breakouts

A breakout doesn't automatically succeed. A breakout without real volume behind it often slides right back below the handle — a classic false breakout.

If the breakout candle's volume isn't noticeably higher than the recent average, waiting one candle for confirmation is often the safer play.

The Pattern Is a Hint — The Decision Is a Number

Spotting a cup and handle gets you halfway there. The other half is calculating the safe leverage and position size based on your entry and stop-loss.
