How BNB Began

BNB was created by Binance, the cryptocurrency exchange co-founded by Changpeng Zhao ("CZ") and a team of early employees, and was sold to the public in an initial coin offering in July 2017 to help fund the exchange's launch. It originally existed as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, designed primarily as a utility token that gave holders discounts on Binance trading fees.

As Binance grew into one of the world's largest exchanges, BNB migrated to its own native blockchain, Binance Chain, in 2019, giving the token a dedicated home outside Ethereum and setting the stage for a much broader role than a simple fee discount.

Key Events in BNB's History

In 2019, BNB moved from Ethereum to the newly launched Binance Chain, its own purpose-built blockchain, giving Binance more control over the token's infrastructure and use cases.

In 2020, Binance launched Binance Smart Chain (BSC), an Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform that let developers build DeFi apps and NFT projects using BNB as gas—triggering a surge in BSC-based activity during the 2021 bull market.

Binance has run a recurring token-burn program since BNB's early years, periodically destroying a portion of BNB supply based on trading volume and other metrics, a mechanism designed to make the token deflationary over time.

In 2022, Binance rebranded BSC as "BNB Chain," and the network suffered a major cross-chain bridge exploit in October 2022, in which attackers minted a large amount of unauthorized BNB before validators intervened to halt the chain.

In November 2023, Binance reached a landmark settlement with US regulators: the company agreed to pay billions of dollars in penalties, and founder Changpeng Zhao pleaded guilty to violating US anti-money-laundering law and stepped down as CEO—one of the largest enforcement actions in crypto history.

What People Are Debating About BNB Today

A large part of BNB's story is inseparable from Binance itself: the exchange remains the dominant trading venue in crypto by volume, and BNB's utility—fee discounts, launchpad access, and payments—rises and falls with Binance's business health and regulatory standing.

BNB Chain continues to compete with other smart-contract platforms for developer activity and total value locked, and observers watch how its lower fees and EVM compatibility hold up against rivals as the market matures.

Ongoing regulatory attention on centralized exchanges globally keeps BNB's relationship to a single company's fortunes a recurring talking point, alongside the long-term effects of its supply-burning mechanism on scarcity.

Bullish and Bearish Factors to Weigh

Nobody can say for certain where BNB will trade in the future, but weighing the concrete forces behind the exchange and the chain can help you decide which direction feels more likely to you.

Bullish Factors

  • Continued dominance of Binance as a trading venue
  • Ongoing supply burns reducing circulating BNB
  • Growth of BNB Chain dApps and users
  • Expanding real-world payment and launchpad utility

Bearish Factors

  • Regulatory pressure on Binance in various jurisdictions
  • Competition from other exchange tokens and smart-contract chains
  • Reputational risk tied to past legal settlements
  • Concentration risk from reliance on one company's ecosystem

Trade Your View, Not a Guess

Nobody can promise you what BNB will be worth in one, three, or five years—not this article, not a forecaster, not a chart pattern. What you can do is understand where BNB came from, the major events that shaped it, and the debates still surrounding Binance and BNB Chain today, so your trading decisions rest on reasoning rather than a hunch.

Once you've formed a directional view, the next step is practical: define your entry, set a stop-loss, and calculate how much leverage actually fits your account and risk tolerance.
